A Thanksgiving Day Message

In front of MWS poster at the University
I hope you all are taking a few moments from cooking, cleaning, running errands, arriving at your destinations and/or welcoming friends and family into your homes for the holiday, to read this message.

The MWS Team and I would like to express our most sincere gratitude to all of the selected MWS women, future selectees/interviewees, and friends of the project for your support and involvement in this most incredible experience, being the Mystic Women of Salem.

To the MWS women - we are so grateful and indebted to you all for giving us the opportunity to glimpse into areas of your lives and experience such phenomenal events, that few and far between are ever allowed.  Your kindness and grace continues to bless us and the project...Thank You!

To future MWS women  - Thank you so much for your patience and understanding about the length of time it takes to process each phase of the project.  And for your support and promotion of the project even prior to notification of your selection!

To Salem State University and my Professors - I cannot express my undying gratitude enough for your support, involvement, and all that you have taught me during my time at the University.  Without your knowledge and teaching skills MWS would have never been conceived - I owe you everything!

To my lil' neighbors - I thank Holly and Chris (not to mention Toby and Noah) who constantly bring me joy and laughter on my front porch.  A special thanks to the girls for my home made cinnamon rolls - you just can't get better than that!  To Toby - you are just one little bundle of unconditional love.  Noah - I thank you every time you come over for protecting me and my house, you are a very good "dog on duty" and I feel better knowing you're watching out for me!

We wish to all of our fans and followers a very Happy and Safe Thanksgiving and for your continued promotion, interest, and constant support!  :}

Behind the Scenes of MWS - Tea Leaf Reader - Lady June!

Lady June upon arrival
Getting ready for the shoot

Photographer and June

goofing around

small smiles

June and her dear friend, Dawn

Very good friends indeed.

When June and Dawn arrived on Saturday, she had obviously come very prepared for her shoot.  Her hair and makeup was flawless, she was wearing gorgeous flowing robes, and was dripping in gold...from her fingertips to numerous shimmering necklaces, to boot.  I was immediately impressed and knew that her shoot was going to be one that I would not forget.

We reviewed the paperwork, got it signed and I explained the basics of her theme, the lighting techniques, and the visual that I was hoping to achieve.  And achieve we did!

June was a natural in front of the camera.  Not only did we get smoke shots, we got candlelight shots as well.  I caught June on camera manipulating the flames of the candle...making it stretch to 2" and higher, then actually changing the color of the base of the flame on command!

There were many, many "things" that happened during this shoot.  The air at one point was the thickest it had ever been during a MWS shoot...we all knew that we were not alone and that the spirits were really the ones in control.  From making their presence known by actually changing color images and back again (this was validated by a personal experience that June had with her recently departed loved one), her pet "Raven" demanding FULL spotlight, and numerous "other-worldly" experiences during the course of her shoot.

Thank you Dawn for all that you did and have done for MWS project.  Thank you June for being an exceptional subject, and thank you guardians and spirits for making this shoot absolutely fascinating in so very many ways!

Mystic Woman, Lady June

Dawn

Friend of the MWS project, Dawn, shown here early in October at Jaho in Salem.  Dawn spent the whole day with me distributing the MWS posters and pr materials to numerous locations in Salem...the "crush" of October was already apparent.  Thanks Dawn for helping me (and the project) in so many ways!!  But, her assistance is not over yet...

Today (Saturday 11/5/2011)  she is accompanying Lady June to the studio for her shoot.  June is one of those "power house" founding Mothers of this area and I look forward to photographing her.

Of all the women I have interviewed June is the only one, that I know of, that does tea leave readings.  I was fascinated by this and needless to say her style of divination will play a major role in the theme of her shoot.

Will have behind the scenes shots/stories and more about June in the next few days...so stay tuned and check back soon!

Boys In Blue Love the Mystic Women of Salem!

Our boys love the MWS!
Two Officers of the Salem Police Department

Our poster on display in breakroom at Salem PD!

Thanks to friend of the project Dawn, our poster was mounted last week in the break room of the Salem Police Department!  I met the Chief and a few of our officers that rainy afternoon in Salem, Ma.  The guys were really nice and wanted to know all about the project.  They wanted to know about the future women to be featured, and when the book is going to be released.  Also, we found, right off the bat that it is indeed a small world...Stephanie, our MWS Firefighter, is known by the Salem PD, on a professional and personal level (her brother is one of the officer's best friend).  A very small world indeed.

Many thanks to the Chief for allowing our poster to be displayed!  To the guys, well, MWS loves ya'll too!  Thank you for your interest and support of our beloved MWS project!

Marblehead Dentist - Impressed!

This is a shot of MWS friend...Dawn's, boss, Jim Fox D.D.S of Fox Dental.  He has a dental office in Marblehead and was so impressed with our poster that he elected to removed the pad, frame the piece, then put the pad back on (for his clients).  Now that's a compliment!

Thanks Jim for your support and enthusiasm !

MWS Welcomes Our Cyber Sorceress to The Team!!

Good Afternoon Everyone,

I hope all the MWS featured women are remaining calm, continuing to breathe, getting at least some rest at night, and are enjoying the fruits of their year long labors during the madness of October 2011 in Salem!

Many, many things/events have occurred over the last few weeks and one in particular that I am very, very proud and relieved about, is our newest addition to the MWS Team - Samantha Shostak (Sam)!

Sam is a grand addition to the team and one that is a perfect fit.  Her skills in  graphic art design are to be admired, her dedication and level of professionalism are extraordinarily high - an absolute must with this project.  The Project Manager said after reading just 2 of her emails, "jeez, I love her already!"

Sam was my tutor in electronic design class in 2010.  I soon learned that she possesses the gift of being a natural born teacher...patience, skill, and a little psych thrown in there as well.  I just adored her, and as she says,"we quickly became friends."

William and I are honored and feel so very fortunate to have Sam on the MWS Team!  I cannot wait for all of you to see some of her work!  She is not only highly skilled, she is also VERY creative and brilliant to boot.

Please join us in welcoming our Cyber Sorceress - Sam!!!  Check out her bio on The Team page!

A Kennedy Interested in MWS Project!!!!

Good Morning everyone!

I have so many cool things to tell all of you.  The last couple of weeks has been incredible...one very cool thing after another regarding the promotion of MWS project.  So...I will be reporting and uploading photos for you every few days in order to keep you all up to date with the latest information/events/ etc.  But, this one...well, I just couldn't stand it, I HAD to tell you immediately!

This afternoon I was making the rounds in Salem, replenishing pr materials to the various store locations, before heading to the University (mid-term prep ya know).  I went in to Artemisia Botanicals and spoke to Darlene.  She was so excited to tell me that Caroline Kennedy and her kids were in the store yesterday browsing around.  Caroline picked up one of the pr cards and engaged in a conversation with Darlene about MWS project.  Darlene reported the Caroline was very intrigued and interested in the project, and wanted to hear more.  So...guess who is sending her some pr materials and going on her website to promote MWS?  Yep!  Will do!!!

I just cannot believe that a Kennedy knows and is interested in MWS!!!  This is only one incident, the list goes on and on about the cool things happening...so check back often people...things are really in high gear right now!

Enjoy this fabulous fall weather and I will blog again in a few days!

Official 2011 PR Launch - The Official Witch Store

From Left to Right =

Penny Cabot

Rebecca Fox

Therese Pendragon

Taken at

The Official Witch Store

Hello Everyone!

Friday October 7, 2011 was the official launching of the MWS PR Campaign Blitz!

Mystic Woman, and dear friend, Penny Cabot, was kind enough to agree to be the first and official launch location of the MWS PR Campaign of 2011.   These shots were taken inside of her beautiful store on Pickering Wharf Friday afternoon.  I showed Penny the huge poster that the University printed for me and she further extended her kindness by allowing me to install it in her window facing the wharf/water!

Later that evening I was driving around Salem, and something led me to the wharf.  When I drove by there was a crowd outside the store, and all of them were gathered around the poster!  How cool is that?

I cannot think of a better place to launch our campaign!

Many, many thanks to our friend Penny!

A "Fare Thee Well" to Brian Miller

Brian Miller, Cyber Wizard of the MWS project is moving on to bigger and better things.  His schedule is just too demanding, therefore he cannot spend the time necessary on the MWS cyber designs and pr materials.  Brian's unique style, dedication, vision, and designs laid the groundwork for the  MWS project.  His knowledge of all things "cyber" allowed the blog (which the Project Manager was insisting upon) to be viewed and enjoyed by many.  Not only was the inital blog (remember, the yellow one) used for enjoyment,  it became an essential tool used by The Team to keep the public and the MWS women continually informed and up-to-date on events, progress, and news that was happening regarding all things MWS.

The PR materials are beautiful and esquisite in composition.  Brian took very basic ideas/suggestions and turned those ideas into breath taking art pieces.  The posters and pr cards are certainly nothing short of artwork in it's highest degree.  You just do not see posters/cards of this caliber very often.

The women of the MWS project, the Project Manager, and myself would like to take this time to give our cyber wizard, Brian Miller, our most sincere thanks and gratitude for all his efforts.  Every single selected MWS woman (and many, many others) that have seen the pr materials are in complete awe of their beauty and excellence.

Thank you so much Brian, for laying the ground work for this enormous international project.  Because of your expertise and skill the world has taken notice of the project and most importantly, the Mystic Women of Salem!

We wish you much success in the future and we fare thee well.  I will miss the laughs and our hen house meetings! You are such a joy to me personally, and I will always hold you dear in my heart.

University Proposal to MWS Project!!

Hello Everyone,

I have VERY exciting news!  Today when I picked up the "pads" for our posters from the print/copy shop at the University, Rose, the shop manager, asked if she could enter our poster in a national graphics/print/poster competition!  The University has won this competition several times, but as Rose explained, she had not seen a poster worthy of entry for a few years.  Wow!  What an incredible proposal this is for the project!  Just to be asked is a HUGE honor.  You must understand, that when you enter the copy shop, the walls are decorated with incredible posters/flyers and various artwork (as well as mounted awards) that has been collected over the years.  Really beautiful work(s).  So for Rose to even propose such a thing is MAJOR...she has seen it all.  This means NATIONAL recognition and viewing of the poster/project by an entirely new genre of people...ARTISTS!

Of course I said yes immediately!  The entry is in the spring...I will find out details and report back to you as soon as possible!  In the mean time, Rose was so impressed with the poster that she is going to print a huge poster on one of her speciality printers and hang it on the door of the shop.  Will definitely be taking a picture of that and will post to the blog for your viewing pleasure.

Once again folks, this project lets me know that it has a power and a life of it's own...and their are no limits on where this is going.

PR Blitz!

Hello Everyone,

I have just seen the posters and 4x6 cards printed for the first time.  One of our faculty at the University (Bob) even custom designed a blue color for us...he calls it "Mystic Blue"!  Thanks BOB!  And a special thanks to Prof Kim, a master printer (not to mention a fine art photographer) for all your help!

All materials are just gorgeous!  The students, faculty, and staff that have seen them are very impressed with their artistic level and beauty.    Even though we have not posted them yet, they are already causing quite a buzz around campus.

You get the feeling you are looking at a piece of art...not just a poster.  I think all of the MWS ladies will be very happy with their promotional materials.  Truly, they reflect beauty, artistic expression, mysticism, power, and intrigue.  I guarantee you, each person that even glimpses at the poster out of the corner of their eye, will stop dead in their tracks to take a longer look!  Ha, mission accomplished!

This is quite a milestone for the Team.  Much, much planning, brainstorming, coordinating, and just plain hard work has gone into this campaign and believe me, it's not over yet.  We still need to receive the print order, and distribute them to our target areas, Salem, Boston, and New York City.  Having to wait until the last minute because of situations beyond our control, we have run into major printing, financial, and time issues!  But, once again our Project Manager, William, comes to the rescue with problem solving ideas, an incredible level of professionalism, and not to mention the finances to bail us out of this situation.  THANK YOU WILLIAM - you have saved us once again, and you really are a PRINCE!

During the first week of October a small number of posters and cards will be distributed around Salem, then when we receive the bulk order blanket distribution will begin (right during mid-terms...luv it).

Lincoln comforting Marcio after treatment

Resting after fluids injections

Lincoln's halo showing!  Marcio feeling better.

As most of you know, the mascot for the MWS project is Marcio Pitarcio Esquire (black alpha).  For over a month now we have been struggling with kidney disease.  His brother Lincoln, comforts him every single night during our fluid injections/treatment...never leaving his side.   There is NO restraining or even coaxing involved, they both know that this must be.  With the incredible support and assistance of The Feline Hospital (Salem), I think Marcio is getting a bit better.  For the first time in over a month he ate some solids last night!  Our little family is pulling together during this crisis and we KNOW Freyja is constantly with us...guiding/supporting/comforting us all.   As far as the Feline Hospital goes...well, all I can say is that they are THE BEST IN THE BUSINESS of all things feline!  And believe me when I tell you this has been a real ordeal..but, Marcio would not be with us today if it were not for them!

We thank you so very much FH for all that you have done and continue to do.

I will keep you all updated on our progress.

Schedule

Good Morning Everyone,

The University is now in full swing again and all PR materials are now finished.  We will be sending everything to the printers asap, in hopes to get them back and distributed during October.

Due to so many scheduling difficulties and many other complications over the summer, we are running a month behind.  Since October is totally slammed for nearly all of the potential "Mystic Women" in Salem, I will not be conducting the remaining interviews until November of this year.  However, I will go forward with the new shoot schedule and will continue shooting...we are on schedule in this area.  A new schedule will be sent to the selected women.

The Project Manager is steadily working on numerous stories and hopes to be up to date in the next month or so.

I hope all of you are well, and looking forward to a fantastic October!  Everyone at my house is certainly looking forward to cooler weather and the arrival of the healing winds of the north.

Have many new things to report to you over the next couple of weeks...until then...breathe ladies...just breathe.

PR Blitz Campaign

Good morning everyone!

I simply cannot wait for you all to see the posters/cards for the upcoming pr blitz...they are eye catching and exquisitely beautiful,  reflecting the mystery and beauty of The Mystic Women of Salem!

We are doing the final touches today, and I hope to have them printed and distributed in 2-3 weeks.  I would ask each of you to view them (will put them up on smugmug upon completion) and send your feedback.  If you'd like some of these materials, please let me know.

Spacing of course was an issue, so not all of you are on them...however, please know that we did the best that we could to include as many women as possible.

I am hoping to reach thousands of people over the next 6 weeks!  Of course, they will be posted all over the University campus...we have over 5000 students here.  Will be distributing to local shoppes/around Salem/Boston and New York City.  As I have said many times, it is critical to have a large following and fan base for publication.  During these hard economic times I certainly hope that this blitz will bring you an increase in your fan bases/customers and clients.  It is one of the goals of this entire project to do just that...to promote you, bring you new business, and certainly new admirers.  This is why we included your contact information under the "Mystic Women" button of the blog...we continue to work very hard for you and I feel it is important for you to know that.

Luv you all!

Therese Pendragon, Parting the Mists of Avalon - Behind The Scenes

The Proj.Mgr. assisting with props.

Lighting change during second half of shoot (test shot).

Mystic Woman, Therese, test shot -  beginning of shoot.

A sneak peek of William and Tabitha assisting Therese.

Therese arrived early in the afternoon on Sunday with her friend Tabitha.  William, the Project Manager, had arrived in Salem a couple of days prior to the shoot, to assist me in the studio.  He and I both knew this was going to be a tough shoot and that there was no way I could do it alone.  My vision was complex and required manipulating air/fabrics/shadows AND lighting.  So, a couple of months ago William volunteered to come and assist me  (he also had business to tend to in Salem).

The vision was of Therese in a canoe with her staff,  floating toward the mists...then parting them with her staff and of course her majick.  I knew it was going to be difficult...but, I had no idea that it would require two assistants, me, and Therese  to bring the vision into this realm/reality.  Fortunately, Freyja was watching out for the project yet again...by sending Tabitha and William.  We simply could not have achieved these shots without the two of them.

Therese was dressed and ready to begin when she arrived.  However, my vision called for her hair to be up (very Goddess like), and since she did not know exactly what I wanted,  she left it up to me to do it.  Being the considerate person that Therese is, she came equipped with an assortment of pins and clasps for me to choose from.   She also had several outfits w/props for me to choose from.  However, when I first saw Therese upon arrival, I knew she nailed the outfit from the get-go!  We got her hair done and decided upon the props to be used, then proceeded.

Even before we began the shoot,  my eyes quickly began fogging up...as if there were a film of vaseline over my iris'.  I rubbed, clawed, used eye drops, etc...but it got no better.  I had to rely on William to tell me if the beginning shots were in focus or not.  All I could see on the LED screen of the camera was a very blurred image...but, somehow I knew they were good, and instincts told me to keep going.  That's just what I did...with NO clear vision.  After the shoot, when I called it a wrap...I was helping take Therese's hair down, it occurred to me that her hair seemed damp and slick.  I asked her if she had hair oil in it...she confirmed.  Instantly I realized that I had literally blurred my eyes with oil (as I have a bad habit of touching my eyes without realizing it)!  However, even without 20/20 the shoot was a smashing success!

So, the moral of this story is...obviously, I won't be helping with hair again.  It is critical that your photog has her eyes!  hee hee :}   You'll never know it when you see her shots though, they are truly gorge and VERY, VERY mystical!!!

Therese, Tabitha, and William worked so hard prior to, during, and after the shoot.  You all were a pleasure to work with and I cannot thank you enough.  We experienced intensity, focused thoughts, some laughs, and had some majickal assistance from time to time.  But,  most importantly...I called it a  "wrap" knowing that we had just created and achieved something quite extraordinary.  I also knew at that point,  this shoot would be impossible "re-create" ever again.

Mission Accomplished :}

Updates

Our mascot, Marcio Pitarcio, Esquire (my black feline familiar) has been under critical care for the last week with kidney disease.  I am having to give him fluid treatments (with the bag/needles) an assortment of meds and a large variety of foods to temp him to eat... each and every night.  He is a little better now though...keep us in your thoughts.

Barbara, of Angelica's shots will be finished and uploaded to the Mystic Women of Salem Gallery this week and I hope to have Therese's shots done as well.

Please bear with me everyone...it is a trying time.  Heck...the whole summer has been a trying time.

Muchas Gracias,
Rebecca :}

Barbara of Angelica's

A cool shot of a prop!

Checking the lighting on Barbara's props.

A couple of test shots of Ms. Barbara

before her shoot began.
Barbara arrived dressed to the nines and groomed to the max!  It was a beautiful day in Salem after hurricane Irene's rage luckily skirted around us, for the most part.  So, it was a great day to shoot.

I told Barbara my vision for her shoot about a month ago.  With that in mind, she brought several outfits and props that would enhance the theme of her shoot.  As luck would have it, the very first outfit she put on and with the Hurrell style lighting we nailed several perfect shots right off the bat.  She listened very carefully to directions and within moments seemed very relaxed and at ease with the camera and lights.  We got numerous good shots and several great ones...yea!

Within an 1 3/4 hours I called it a wrap!  A very enjoyable and easy afternoon with Ms. Barbara.

Congratulations to our "angel" Mystic Woman... Barbara - you did great!  :}

Too, Too, Too Many Hurricanes!

As I sit here in the photo lab at school waiting for the cyber wizard (we are working on pr materials today), the thought of yet another hurricane in my life has really got me down.   Night before last at about 11pm I walked outside on to the front porch.  My mind was suddenly slammed with memories of my childhood in South Texas...due to the sound of the crickets...not just a few and not pleasantly singing.  Thousands of them, singing so loud that it was almost deafening!  This is a sound very familiar to me, but one that had been forgotten.  Alarm bells started going off like crazy.  Prepare ole' gal...prepare, there's a storm ah comin".

I remember in specific 3 cat 4-5's during my first 10 years of life.  The devastation was unbelievable.  Between the wind and mostly the WATER...life as I knew it had changed.  It was unbearably hot, humid, and miserable.  Shortly after these storms, people would get desperate and that's when the looting would begin and nobody was safe...hence JR's (my Father) guns.  I was not afraid of them though...he taught me to shoot at 9 - shooting water moccasins and cotton mouth snakes in the lake water.  It was the people I was afraid of.

Being so close to the ocean makes me very nervous because of my childhood...I have seen what WALLS of water look like and what they can do.  Having numerous conversations with folks in Salem about this...their response was always the same,"hurricanes don't come up here...the water is too cold."

Moving to the East Coast area a few years ago I thought I had escaped hurricanes for good.  My question is..."how 'bout those hurricanes that never come up here?"

Be safe everyone... :}

Barbara of Angelica's

Our next Mystic Woman on the shoot schedule is Barbara of Angelica's Shoppe in downtown Salem.
Barbara is also another  fascinating woman, who communicates and works in the spirit realm with angels.   It is my impression that she consults them psychically and does readings for people utilizing this skill.

Her shoppe is certainly one of the most beautiful shoppes in all of Salem.  It is stocked with crystals, cards, divination tools, jewelry, a huge gift selection, and  all things fanciful/beautiful, with much, much more to see and experience.

Although Irene's winds have caused our shoot to be a bit delayed...Barbara and I are going forward and will only be "set back" a few days.

The inspiration for her shoot is no other than the master himself George Hurrell.. my idol.   His photographs of all the great movie stars of the 20-30-40-50- and 1960's is in his award winning body of work.  My love of shadows and dramatic lighting comes from Hurrell's mastery of shadows on film.  Of course being the main photog for MGM, Paramount, and 20th Century Fox was indeed a bit of a "perk".  He said himself...,"if I needed 300 yards of heavy velvet - I had it within the hour, not to mention the finest props/lighting in the country."

Here's to you Mr. Hurrell, I hope to make you proud!  :}

Stephanie Eaton!

Two of the really cool props Steph brought.

Wiping her tootsies before stepping on her black flooring.

A really hot and sweaty photog next to a ravishing beauty.

Steph and I clowning around.
Stephanie and her beaux, Tony, arrived at the studio with an arsenal of gowns, props, magical instruments, smiles, and a high level of excitement and enthusiasm...all of which make my job easier - automatically. The hours of design and preparation for the shoot was obviously worth it from the very beginning!

I had been at the studio for several hours setting up, prior to their arrival.  I was a bit scattered and stressed, largely because of Mercury's havoc in my life (and my shoots) over the last few weeks.   However, once all equipment tests were confirmed...all systems were GO!

Tony became a big help to Steph and I both.  He literally became my assistant over the next few hours.  The photos you see above, of she and I, were taken by Tony.  Thanks so much Tony...great job!!!!

Stephanie was eager to help in any way possible throughout the shoot and was a stunningly beautiful model.   The first gown she wore was very similar to the "Harlow" background fabric that photographs so beautifully.  Those shots were absolutely breathtaking and worthy of a Vogue layout (with a "mystic" twist, of course)!   When you see them I think you all will agree.  There were several gown and lighting changes...all successful and beautiful, which makes editing VERY tough, but so worth it.

We had a very successful shoot and I owe much thanks to Freyja for controlling Mercury, to Tony for assisting, and to Stephanie for all her hard work...great attitude...and all her preparations.  THANKS EVERYONE!!

Stephs shots being considered for Mystic will be uploaded to the smugmug gallery post haste...check them out and SPREAD the word!

Please hit "like" above and become a follower of your favorite Mystic Woman!  :}

Correction to Olga Kaminsky post

Olga is from Belarus NOT the Ukraine as previously stated.  To Olga's parents, "sorry about that."  :}

Stephanie Eaton - MWS's own Firefighter!

By the time this entry posts, I hope to have completed Stephanie's shoot.  This will be a difficult shoot and very time consuming, because of the complexity of the lighting design and we hope to get some "smoke" shots. I have done several shoots photographing smoke...it is not easy and truly- you just never know what you're going to get.  But, we're going to try anyway.

Stephanie is a breath taking beauty, on the inside and out.  She is one of the few female firefighters on the North Shore of Massachusetts.  I have to admit after interviewing Steph and finding out what she does for a living, my feelings about fire fighters became very personal in nature.  Now, every time a fire truck passes by with their sirens on, I bless them and the truck...hoping to the Goddess that our Steph is not in that truck.  Hokey I know, but it's my little way of showing appreciation and affection for those that put their very lives in danger trying to assist and hopefully save others from harm.

Wow Steph...we are so honored to have you as a Mystic woman!  I know you're going to have some absolutely "stunning" shots... can't wait.

Your "behind the scenes" shots will be in that category soon.

Recognition of a Silent but Strong Supporter

I would like to take the time to recognize a very important supporter of this project...and me, really.  William Fox, Project Manager of MWS and who just happens to be my son, is largely responsible for this entire project getting off the ground.  Believe me when I tell you that if it were not for his experience and connections in the publishing world, MWS would have merely been a fleeting thought.  "It would be so cool if someone did a book about the women of Salem...can't believe it has not been done before now."  And that would have been the end of it.  But, has fate and Freyja have obviously planned, MWS was not meant to be just a thought...a dream...a wish.  It is a reality and was born in June of 2010.  Great, another Gemini!  That certainly explains her temperment.

It is crystal clear to William and I that there are "other" forces at work here.  So apparant and so obvious that there is no denying the fact that MWS is bound and determined to "become."

William, being in NYC, is mostly a silent investor to all of you (until you work with him directly after your shoot).  But, to me and to the project, his undying support is constant and continues daily.  Like an old oak tree that has it's roots planted firmly in the earth, William's belief and confidence never waivers.  Not an inch.  Even to the point of countless dollars, never ending conversations, expression of the voice of reason,  with a photographer/Mother who's confidence sways like a palm tree in a hurricane...almost daily.

Here's to you my dear son...it is time that the vast amount of viewers know just how critical and crucial your role is to this project.  For your never ending support, emotionally, physically, and spiritually...I thank you.

And one day, the entire world will thank you.  :}

Olga - MWS's Yoga Master

Prop for Olga
Our yoga master arrives

A hint of another shot
Olga arrived right on time and was grinning from ear to ear!  I was so happy to see her again, it had been an entire year and much had changed in her life.  She had gotten married, and was now with child...not to mention that her hair had grown all the way to her waist...lovely, just lovely!

I focused on the difficult shots in the very beginning.  Getting the "halo" around her with gel lights was a bit tedious and time consuming, but, when I got it just right the shoot went very fast after that.  Olga was pure joy to work with and followed direction extremely well.  Not only that, but her expertise in yoga mudras was incorporated into each phase of her shoot.  She had wonderful ideas and made an excellent model.  Towards the end of her shoot we did some grid photos that turned out almost angelic!  To see some of her photos being considered for the book, go to http://allure.smugmug.com and look for the Mystic Women of Salem gallery.

Great job Olga, you have made the MWS Team very proud!  Your contribution to the project reflects the great diversity among the women of the project.  We are very proud of you, your message, and feel honored to have you as a featured woman in The Mystic Women of Salem photography book.

Olga - MWS's Yoga Master

This week I am shooting Ms Olga, MWS's very own yoga instructor/master.
Olga is a beautiful young woman from the Ukraine.

I interviewed Olga last year and was truly captivated by her inner light and physical beauty.  I knew without a doubt that she would photograph exquisitely.  However, her shoot had to be "adjusted" a bit, as Olga is now "with child" (which has happened to several of our MWS ladies).  So, time is of great importance here for several reasons - her pregnancy, and I really would like one of her shots to be included on the pr campaign materials.  Her photograph will reflect diversity among the women/subjects...VERY important for this project.

I will certainly do some behind the scenes shots and will keep you "posted".  Please keep your fingers crossed for us, that the lil' devil mercury will behave and that Freyja will intervene and grace Olga's shoot with creative flow, magical energy, and above all EXCELLENCE!  At bare minimum Freyja, could you just keep the equipment working?  :}

Just Breathe - Mercury in Retrograde Until September!

You may have read part of the following on MWS's Facebook.
Having five...yes, that's right FIVE planets in Gemini, when Mercury is in retrograde my entire life is turned upside down.  People usually do not understand when I get upset about something failing,breaking,crashing...etc.  What is happening in my mind is sheer panic,"is this the beginning? Hold on, brace yourself, run for cover, hide, stay home."  I have been trained very well by our planetary system/universe and can tell you without references when my ruling planet Mercury is in retrograde.  Last time it was ALL studio, lab, and pooter problems.

A couple of weeks ago it started... with all kinds of failure(s) of equipment in the studio.  Followed by a broken tooth, camera died, Silva (my magic truck) broke... all within the last couple of weeks.  One after another...disaster.  I became suspicious and mentioned on facebook that I suspected mercury had something to do with my woes.  And low and behold...it is so.  Now, at least, I know what's going on!  I know to fasten those seat belts EXTRA tight and ride it out.  Mercury affects so many people and things, sometimes I wonder if others have continuous "break downs" on the same level as I do.  Is it those five planets ruled by Mercury making my life EXTRA difficult?

Hold on ole' gal, hold on.  The bottom line is this -

Just breathe...Mercury is in Retrograde!  :}

Studio Rules/Policies

Performance Art Photography

Studio/Shoot Policy
December 2010

The following policies have been created and implemented with several years of studio shooting and education experience(s). There are also Salem State University rules listed as well, as the studio used is at the University. Please know that with all this experience and too many shoots to count, these rules/policies must be followed in order to ensure a safe, successful, and enjoyable experience.

It is the goal of PAP (Performance Art Photography) to produce the highest quality of photography utilizing state of the art equipment, software, and extensive knowledge in the photography field.

If there are any questions regarding the following please do not hesitate to discuss with the photographer. Your respect for these rules and cooperation is much appreciated.

No children are allowed in the studio at any time…this is NOT negotiable (the studio is not safe for little ones).
All electronic devices must be turned off and put away during your shoot.
No visitors/spectators are allowed to accompany you unless discussed and approved by the photographer prior to your shoot date. If approved, they can only be there as SILENT observers.

All hair and makeup (aside from quick touch-ups) must be done prior to your shoot time.

Clothes/costumes may be changed into at the studio…quickly.

No eating, smoking, or drinking (except for occasional water sips) is allowed in the studio.

Occasional “breaks” during your shoot will be done at your request.

No animals are allowed unless approved by the photographer.
You MUST sign a Model Release prior to your shoot.

A draft of your “story” must be given to the photographer prior to your shoot.

Absolutely no cameras of any kind (including camera phones are allowed in the studio by you and/or your guest(s).

Any questions and/or comments about your shoot must be discussed prior to the shoot.

These rules come from many, many experiences in the studio. Please understand that the style of PAP is direct connection with the subject. Any distractions such as phones, blackberry’s, conversation w/guest(s), etc., really has an adverse effect on the photographer and the shooting experience in general. PAP depends upon your undivided attention during the shoot in order to produce extraordinary poses, and shots.

The lighting done during, “The Mystic Women of Salem” project are original, difficult, and would take a very experienced/seasoned photographer to try and re-produce. PAP is very protective of these techniques/styles of lighting. This is why there are absolutely no cameras allowed at any time.

Please be aware that these shoots are VERY technical. Working with high tech equipment and manipulating various forms of energy and lighting is complex and requires much attention from the photographer. Although PAP definitely wants your experience to be an enjoyable one, please know that there will be times when the photographer is pre-occupied and deep in thought. The photographer will let you know when a moment of silence is required.
Thank you so much for your interest in, “The Mystic Women of Salem” project. We hope that your experience with this project is stimulating, thought provoking, creative, joyous, magical, and will prove to be one of the “highlights” of your life.

This is truly one of our goals,

“The Mystic Women of Salem” Team

A Meltdown

- Written Sunday, August 7, 2011  Evening -

For the second time in the last two weeks I have had to cancel a scheduled shoot due to equipment failure (have been dealing with equipment issues for months now).  This shoot was one of the Mystic Women, who was very gracious when I explained to her what was going on.  The good thing is that I caught her at home before she left to come to the studio.

Time and scheduling is critical for me.  Mostly, because I can only be upright for a few hours each day before my body begins to break down and cause so much agony that I pay for it all night long (if not days).  I have learned over time how to juggle things to where I can accomplish certain things each day...and NOT push it.  That seems to work for me.  So when issues come up like sudden cancellations/re-schedules, it sends me into a tailspin as I know to "double up or pull an all-nighter" is a physical impossibility.  Hence, my meltdown today.

We got the equipment working last week and thought everything was fine...when to my utter shock today, it was my camera all along...my bread and butter just died.  It made several attempts then sputtered, and died.  So, after calling my client, I just could not help but to have a total and complete meltdown.  Of course I will have to send it to Cannon for repair which will push back my schedule even further.  We are under major pressure right now to get these shots done so I can forward the photos to Brian so he can finish the PR materials in time for printing and distribution in Sept. And of course, school begins in Sept.

It is times like these that I wonder why I am doing all this massive amount of work...for no money(MWS)?  I seriously question my sanity sometimes.

I broke down the studio and loaded the truck crying all the way home on a rainy day feeling defeated, helpless, and confused.  Sometimes this hard headed southern gal breaks down and today was the day.

After arriving home and curling up on the couch to finish my cry,  I saw the Behind the Scenes part 1 episode of the final Oprah Show (yes, I am a fan).  And one statement Ms. O made to the viewers really hit me,"the only courage you need is the courage to live the life of your dreams."  I am a FIRM believer there are NO coincidences, I was meant to hear that statement.

It is my dream to finish this project, to create an exquisite photography/historical/literary book, that in turn will tell the world about the phenomenal group of women that reside in this very magical place.

Yes...I now have the courage to go on (and maybe, just maybe my photography degree can be fit in there too).

Summer Interviews

I began interviewing in July, 2011 and am continuing through August and possibly September.  At this point it looks like it will be September before the final selections are done.  At that point the Team and I will be notifying the final 13 women and a new shoot schedule will be sent out.

The interviews have been fascinating, shocking, stunning, intriguing, and just plain AWESOME in every way.  Remember ladies, even if you are not selected for MWS that does not mean that you are not automatically being considered for The Witches of Salem (the final book in the trilogy series).
Diversity among the selectees has to be a heavy consideration ie the reason I named it "Mystic" Women of Salem.  I want to capture and reflect the incredible layers and levels of so many extraordinary women in our area though photography and artistic expression.   Being repetitive and redundant is simply not an option for this particular book, and I am constantly aware of the aforementioned during every interview.  The more diverse/different all the women are, the better.  So, please keep that in mind when announcements are made.

As always, you women of Salem did not and have not let me down...you consistently keep us inspired, focused, and committed to  The Mystic Women of Salem!

Hills and Valleys

I knew when this project was conceived that there was going to be extensive labor involved before the final birth arrival.  However, what I was not prepared for is "life" issues that seem to overwhelm me at times.  Working with this many women has been so interesting and rewarding, but they...just like we all...are experiencing life's challenges and issues.  We have experienced upcoming births/births, disease, deaths, relocations, career changes, new gigs/performances, vacations/getaways, divorce and everything in between that you can imagine.  Because of "life",  scheduling has become a real issue.  I have had to re-schedule many of our selected ladies due to the above and let's not forget equipment failure and issues.  Never have I experienced such a bombardment of the hills and valleys that we all experience and deal with during the course of our lifetimes, as I have during this past summer.  At times my mind would just be spinning with all these hills/valleys and I really could not get a grip on what was happening.  Then, it finally occurred to me...working and scheduling this many women over such a short period of time, (and believe me...2 years to produce a series with 33 subjects is insanity, ask any pro photog) of course all these things are going to be happening!

I am just hoping that "life" will calm down a bit when the winds of the north begin blowing and all begin to settle down for a slower and calmer pace in preparation for the winter.

For me however, the fall and winter is when my life will be at full throttle and warp speed...with a full load at the University, shooting for Portfolio, Performance Art Photography, and MWS!
Good Goddess girl...you really are nuts!

WELCOME TO OUR NEW AND IMPROVED BLOG!

As you all know, initially,  the Team had planned on launching a completely new site for MWS project by September, 2011.  However,  after really getting into the "nitty gritty" of our original plan and seeing just how difficult the new site is to design (not to mention the time it will take), we elected to update/upgrade our current blogsite.  Time allowances for such an ambitious and creative endeavor were and are enormous.  In order to meet our deadline for the PR blitz in the Fall of 2011, it became quite apparent that there just was not enough time to complete the site.  Brian will be designing and developing the new site and we estimate it's completion to be in the Fall of 2012...perfect!

Brian added so many cool elements to this blog...there are just too many to itemize!  So, scroll,  peruse around and check it out!

We elected to have the blog reflect the color scheme/palette of our PR materials, so you can kind of see what we are going for...the general "feel" of the posters/flyers/cards.  Really you are getting a "sneak peak" in a sense.   Brian did an amazing job on this...his choices of colors and highlights really reflect the message and experience that we want our fans and the general public to have.

Please check out all the new sections of the blog.  All data has been transferred to these sections, so you will see the old information AND the new.

Thanks Bri...Fabulous...just Fabulous!

Hello everyone!

I am only a couple of days away from beginning a much needed and long overdue vacation. Even though the campus is closed during Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays, you can bet that I was here in the photo lab working the entire time. It is a running joke between the professors' that I secretly have a cot stashed somewhere and that I really live here. But, I do not...just VERY, VERY dedicated and driven. I think it is fair to say that the MWS project has literally consumed my life, school gets in the way, home gets in the way, and every other facet of my life seems to take a back seat to the project. This is a HUGE undertaking and I want you all to know that the Team and I are working very hard to produce a book that is beautiful, elegant, historical, literary, and one that you all will be very proud of.

The cyber wizard is on vacay the month of June, however, William, Brian, and myself will be getting together next week for a business/social dinner. Brian has some fabulous ideas and plans for the posters/pr material for our upcoming media campaign in October, 2011. Those ideas and visuals will be discussed and future areas of promotion will be included in the discussion as well. Legal issues (copyrights, domains etc.) are being discussed and will be addressed over the next few weeks.

The Project Manager, William, is arriving in Salem next week and we will be stopping by most of the shoppes/businesses owned by the MWS ladies to say hello and to touch base with everyone possible. I am sending out the interview schedule dates today to possible featured MWS ladies which will be happening in July, 2011. Summer shooting begins in July as well...so make sure you have your story drafts ready (MWS ladies) ! Jac's is a wonderful example for all of the featured women and I think William is sending that to them today. This should help...not to stress the Project Manager is on the way!

Yesterday I attended a RAW workshop with one of my professor's from the University, and now I have lots more majickal tricks at my fingertips than ever before! Constantly learning and adding to my expertise as a "Mystic Photographer". There were photographers from all over the states in attendance. We learned very advanced re-touching techniques using the latest version of LightRoom as well as some REALLY majickal special effects. CAN'T wait for the University to get our upgraded version of LightRoom!!

Enjoy the beautiful weather here in New England! Get some plants in the ground, feed the little birds and animals, enjoy the sights, smells, and visuals of summer here in one of the most majickal places on earth...Salem!

STEVIE NICKS "LIKES" OUR PROJECT!!!

Yes, that's right...Ms. Stevie Nicks!

I will send her a copy of the book when it is complete...she will love it and all of you!

Good afternoon everyone, it is an absolutely gorgeous day here in the majickal city of Salem!

Several of you have inquired about Akuura's shoot and wondered why there are only three photos of her in the MWS gallery http://allure.smugmug.com Mystic Women of Salem gallery. I was very dissatisfied with the background tones/colors that was selected for Akuura's shoot. After discussing this problem with Akuura, she graciously agreed to do a re-shoot in November, 2011. Thanks Ak!! When we do her re-shoot and the photos are complete, I will upload the best shots to the gallery and will begin promoting her shoot...just as I have done and will do for each Mystic woman.

Brian, the Cyber Wizard, and I met last Friday. It is his professional opinion that we have outgrown the Blogger template for the MWS blog/site. His suggestions for the new one are "jaw-droppingly" beautiful and will catapult our blog/site to an incredibly high level of professionalism and will feature your actual shots (from the studio) while still being protected (to keep them from being copied, distributed, shared, etc.,). Security is a huge issue with a project this big. Which brings me to several issues that need to be addressed.

Prints - When you purchase/are given a print from me directly or from my smugmug site, you have obtained a hard copy print only. In other words, buying a print and scanning/copying it and turning it into a jpg for use on your websites/facebook/internet is prohibited. To use your photos on the internet as digital copies requires a license agreement (I will furnish this to you upon request for Past shoots). This also assures that your images are of the highest quality. Copying, etc., etc., definitely compromises the quality of prints and eventually jpgs will lose critical information and become unusable. Usually a digital copy is purchased just as a print is purchased, although the fees are quite expensive. However, since I did not make this clear in the past, I will be happy to do this for you upon request (if you have bought an 8x10 or larger).

It is important that you all know that I own the copyrights for every photo that I take. Meaning, if Joe Public of Magic Carpets sees your photo that I've shot, and wants to use it in his advertising campaign, Joe Public must purchase that right from me/Performance Art Photography. The more successful I become, the more valuable my photographs.

Mounted Prints - If you have received a mounted and signed print from me, I strongly suggest that you hold on to it. The value will only increase over time...especially signed prints. Mounted prints have very specific needs/care that is required. For instance, these prints are museum quality and must be framed by a professional. The glass must not touch the print itself. Prints of this caliber are saturated with ink on museum quality paper/canvas...humidity and the elements themselves will eventually destroy it. Also, they must not be hung in direct sunlight, even if you have it protected with museum glass (has major filters)...not a good idea.

New digital photos will have "photo by..." on the photo itself, so you don't have to worry about including that verbage when you use the photo, only if the text has been cropped off will you be required to include "photo by...". Also, it is imperative that you all understand that changing the content of the photo in any way, shape or form (photoshop, adding/deleting props, any manipulation of the photo whatsoever) is also prohibited, and there are no exceptions to this rule. If you have a situation that requires additional work/manipulation to your photo, I MUST be the one that does it.

I want all your photographs to be the highest quality possible and the only way to ensure this is for me to process all phases of your photographs. I have spent thousands upon thousands on my photography education and feel that my clients benefit greatly from that education. I will develop (hard copy) an agreement that must be signed prior to a shoot, to ensure that there are no misunderstandings in the future. Please understand that I LOVE all of you promoting your photographs and will do everything in my power to assist you in the future!

Happy, happy spring to all! Salem is just glorious right now (have photos at my facebook page and on the website...http://allure.smugmug.com Favorites Gallery). And I am so happy and relieved to report that the Cyber Wizard and I made it through yet another semester, maintaining status on the Dean's List (straight A's in Photography - yea!).

Needless to say we are exhausted. The last few weeks of school are really grueling, and it does not seem to matter how well you plan ahead during the semester, the last few weeks are a nightmare. BUT, we made it through.

I have great personal news, my son is coming soon and he is looking for a house/condo to buy here in Salem. My realtor, Virginia Carson of Tache Real Estate is handling the sale and knows all there is to know about Salem (she's 4 generations here). I will be moving in and taking care of his property for him.

In the meantime, I am steadily working on photos (as usual). Have added Akuura, Jac, and Penny to the "My Favories" gallery (of the website) ...congratulations ladies...great work! Been adding those "majickal" touches to the final portraits and I am pleased with the outcome.

I am working steadily on the historic shots as well as the blog, facebook, and the website. No rest for the weary. Am gearing up for the upcoming shoots as well. Have numerous shoots scheduled AND the design of the pr materials begins in July. Will be contacting Aepril Schaile about doing a shoot at one of her classes. Her shoot is going to be a bit different, as there is physical preparation involved. This will be an extremely difficult shoot for both her and I, due to demands of the body. But, I will tell you this...all the preparation will be worth it. My vision is extraordinary and haunting in many, many ways. It will be glamorous, dark, seductive, and beautiful...all at once and just like Aepril herself. This shoot has haunted me for months...mostly in dreams, so I will be VERY relieved when it is complete. Much planning ahead though, much planning ahead.

So, there's lots going on with the project. Check out all the sites and don't forget...BECOME A FOLLOWER and spread the news..."The Mystic Women of Salem" are coming soon!

Hello Everyone!

Brian and I met April 22, 2011 to discuss our next plan of action with the project's promotion. Designs and the implementation of the media blitz will begin in July, 2011. The cyber wizard will begin designing the poster and pr cards which will be distributed in September as listed in the April 29, 2011 update.

For now, we are running around campus trying to get our papers, projects, assignments, and exams out of the way. IT IS HELL WEEK at Salem State University!

For those "featured women" of MWS that are scheduled for a shoot in summer, 2011 you MUST bring a draft of your story that will accompany your portrait in the book, to the shoot. This is mandatory and there are NO exceptions. You may however, email your draft to the Project Manager (William) at foxhagen@hotmail.com prior to your shoot. I will confirm with William.

For women who are interviewed this summer, a draft of their story must be brought to the interview. Stories will play a significant role in the selection of the remaining featured women.

Due to many of the "featured women" urging me to become a "Mystic Woman", I have decided to join the rest of the women and include myself in the book. We don't have a mystic photographer! Hee hee! I will be working on my story with William and we will use that as an example for you all. As more stories are completed we will be sending them out as tools to assist the others with their stories.

OK everyone, I will be back with more news in a couple of weeks! Enjoy this weather everyone! :}

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Good day everyone!

The cyber wizard and I met last week and discussed our media blitz campaign strategy for the promotion of the project. Instead of changing the color and appearance of the blog, printing posters and cardstock for immediate distribution we decided to wait. Our strategy is to do the aforementioned in September, 2011 when hundreds of thousands of people desend upon Salem for the October festivities. I am sure that a number of the shoppes will allow us to place the pr materials in their stores during this time. We most certainly will be distributing in Boston, and New York City as well. Why are we doing all this so early in the game? As the Project Manager, William, told me in the beginning planning stage of MWS, it is critical that we reach the masses and develop support BEFORE the agent/publishing house becomes involved. The more that is done the better! The entire book will be done and I will have an original printed for their review. This gives the project an immediate advantage, in that they can SEE what we are producing versus just telling them (a great disadvantage). This is the primary difference between literary and photography publishing. So, your information that accompanys you in the Mystic Women section of the blog should be done by then, for sure.

Also, I have to tell you that William is already beginning to see that we are fast approaching a "bottle-neck" situation due to the procrastination/delay of women getting their drafts (stories) to him. We are coordinating the story submission and shoots together now. If you have not been shot don't worry...if you have, you must get your drafts to him asap. Upcoming shoots (8-10) over the summer...if you are scheduled you need to be thinking about your story NOW. If you need guidance/help please contact William at foxhagen@hotmail.com

Let's avoid a terrible situation by staying on schedule which will lead to a much less "stressed" environment. I want this project to be excellent, professional, inspiring, successful, and FUN with the least amount of stress possible.

Thanks ladies and enjoy your Patriots Day Holiday! :}

PS - Please encourage everyone you know to become a FOLLOWER OF THE BLOG, I cannot emphasize enough how very important this is.
